Kent Hospital is a 359-bed, nonprofit, acute care hospital serving approximately 300,000 residents of Warwick, West Warwick, East Greenwich, West Greenwich, Coventry and parts of North Kingstown, Exeter and Cranston, Rhode Island.

Kent is located on 57 acres in the Toll Gate section of Warwick (11 miles south of Providence) and is the second largest single-site hospital in the state.

Chartered by the State of Rhode Island in 1946, Kent opened with 90 beds in 1951 and expanded in 1960, 1973 and 1981 to keep pace with community growth. Today, Kent provides a full complement of inpatient services including:

  • Cardiology and extended coronary care
  • Infectious disease
  • Primary care
  • Oncology
  • Orthopedics
  • Obstetrics and gynecology
  • Rehabilitation
  • Surgery

In addition, the hospital offers a comprehensive range of outpatient services including cardiac catheterization, chemotherapy, diagnostic imaging and surgery. The hospital also operates an Ambulatory Surgery Center, Women's Diagnostic Imaging Center and a Wound Recovery Center, and provides laboratory and primary care services at various sites throughout the community.

Kent Hospital has 2,104 employees, a medical staff of 600, a volunteer corps of more than 300 and 327 auxilians.

Kent's Emergency Department (ED) is the second busiest in the state with some 70,000 annual visits. The ED's patient rapid assessment model has dramatically reduced waiting time and overall length of patients visit.

Kent is governed by the 17-member voluntary Care New England Board of Directors drawn from the community it serves. Paari Gopalakrishnan, MD, MBA, is president and chief operating officer of Kent Hospital.

In January 1951, a nucleus of 35 women became the original members of the Kent County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. As Frances P. Hammond, the first president said, “We are thankful as a group that there is a hospital in Kent County and we pledge our support.” From these humble words the Auxiliary emerged as the Hospital’s number one champion and supporter and one of its most important fund-raisers.

The commitment that Frances Hammond pledged nearly 65 years ago is alive and well today. The Auxiliary’s mission remains unchanged: To promote and advance the welfare of Kent Hospital. We continue the commitment for those who have gone before us as we continue to advance and promote the quality care that is delivered to our patients every day by the thousands of people dedicated to Kent Hospital’s mission.

Since 1951, the Auxiliary has donated well over $7 million in support of hospital programs and services. Previous major gifts have contributed to the hospital’s building and renovating of the Ambulatory Services Pavilion, Infusion Center, Women’s Diagnostic Imaging Center, Sleep Lab, Emergency Department, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and Dialysis Unit. The Auxiliary has helped to purchase vascular, dialysis, cardiac, orthopedic, pharmaceutical and diagnostic imaging equipment, as well as patient beds, hospital vans, educational materials and more. Auxilians tirelessly volunteer thousands of hours to the hospital and act as ambassadors to the surrounding communities. We raise funds from the proceeds of the Hospitality Shop, the gift shop that is run by the Auxiliary and staffed mainly by volunteers, as well as other fundraising activities. The Auxiliary’s 20th Annual Golf Tournament is scheduled for July 10, 2017. This very successful fundraiser will once again be held at the Potowomut Golf Club.

The Auxiliary operates The Hospitality Shop, which is located inside the main entrance of Kent Hospital. Our shop is staffed with volunteers who are always willing to help with a smile. All of the proceeds from the shop are donated to Kent Hospital for patient care. With our help, the Ambulatory Services Pavilion, Infusion Center, Sleep Lab, Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Women’s Diagnostic Imaging Center have been built. The Emergency Department, Cardiac Unit and Dialysis Unit have been refurbished, among many other projects.
