The Stroke Center at Kent Hospital is committed to providing a comprehensive, state-of-the-art approach to the diagnosis and treatment of stroke and increasing community awareness of the danger of stroke. The Stroke Center was the second hospital in the state to receive the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers and is accredited from CARF, the international quality standards body for rehabilitation services.
Every Minute Counts
Stroke is a brain injury that occurs when the brain's blood supply is interrupted. Without oxygen and nutrients from blood, brain tissue starts to die rapidly, resulting in sudden loss of function. Left undiagnosed or treated, it can result in serious and debilitating injury or loss of life.

Kent has assembled a team of experienced clinical professionals who work together under nationally recommended guidelines of the American Stroke Association to coordinate timely intervention, treatment and rehabilitation.
- Dedicated stroke unit providing a team-centered, multi-disciplinary approach to the acute inpatient phase with a unique model of care.
- Full resources of the Kent Emergency Department available 24/7.
- A team of clinicians specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke.
- Acute intervention including clot-dissolving medications if appropriate.
- State-of-the-art diagnostic imaging to detect stroke and its complications.
- State-of-the-art CARF accredited Stroke Specialty Program at the Inpatient Rehabilitation Center and progressing into the full outpatient rehabilitation resources of Kent Hospital and Care New England including the VNA of Care New England, leaders in home health care and providers of comprehensive home care services including and rehabilitation services.
- Case management, including referral and progression to other services.
- Community outreach and education.
Living with Stroke
People who survive a stroke often suffer serious, long-term disability. Stroke damage can result in paralysis, numbness, imbalance, and difficulty communicating. While there is no way to reverse the effects of stroke, it is possible to regain some function lost. Kent's experienced rehabilitation therapists help stroke survivors restore independent and productive lives.
